All three democrats on the PA supreme court have won their retention elections, so that's excellent news. Had they not won their individual retention votes, Gov. Josh Shapiro would have been able to appoint three new judges to replace them. But he would have had to try to get them through a Republican-controlled state senate, which would not have happened. Good news indeed.

The electoral maps show the wealthy and republicans voted for Cuomo. I think a fair amount of people weren't buying that Mamdani is some raging anti-semite. Today, those pockets of Cuomo support like TriBeCa and the Upper East side look a bit out of touch with their neighboring neighborhoods.

It is sooo easy to brand someone a socialist or communist.. in India, anyone who expresses any sympathy for tribals or marginalized people is automatically called an 'urban naxalite' -- the reference is to a group of terrorists who operated in the jungles. sigh.. nobody wants to look at reality or have any empathy for anybody.

It is what I call "The age of volume". You just don't want to make sense, you want to scream the loudest.
Somebody even mentions income inequality? "Socialist, communist, danger to society".
Somebody brings up immigration changes? "fascist, xenophobe, racist".

Zero analysis; just scream the loudest.

I am not sold on Mandhami; I have heard that speech before, in a Venezuelan accent. But the problems mentioned by him are not trivial, and the usual methods are not going to solve them.

Fortunately his power is limited to one city no matter how large. Let him prove what he can actually do in the real world with all its limitations.

NYC is just a city but, population wise and economic wise, it is like he is the president of a small country. As you say, it will be a good test to see how his ideas and policies work. But he reminds me of S. American leftist politicians: a lot of promises during the campaign, and then, when they get to power, they simply cannot execute (or, in S. America's case, really never meant it).

Just like clockwork, Republicans have filed suit to stop Proposition 50 in California from taking effect. Their grounds? It's unconstitutional.

It will be very interesting to see what the U.S. Supreme Court does with the Louisiana case they have on their docket. It will be impossible for the conservative majority to leave either side unscathed. And just trying to hurt one side less (the President who owns them) won't be easy to accomplish, either. They'll finally get a sense for what it's like to be a pretzel that tries to bend after it's already baked.
