by ti-amie Halep, Wozniacki, Nishikori and Landaluce, the first Mutua Madrid Open Wildcards
03/04/2024

The Mutua Madrid Open announced on Thursday the names of the first four invitees to the WTA and ATP main draws: Simona Halep, Caroline Wozniacki, Kei Nishikori and Martín Landaluce.

The WTA 1000 category tournament, having issued these two wildcards, will now have in its draw two players who know what it is to be the world No. 1, as well as having at least reached the final in the Caja Mágica.

No women has reached the decider on the Madrid clay more times than Halep. She did so for the first time in 2014, but lost the final to Maria Sharapova. However, in 2016 and 2017 she claimed her two crowns in the Manolo Santana Stadium. In 2019 she was back in the title bout, but lost out to Kiki Bertens. Halep is, along with Serena Williams, the only player to have successfully defended a WTA title in Madrid.

For her part, Wozniacki was a finalist in the first season the Caja Mágica hosted the event, 15 years ago. It was in the 2009 final that the Dane faced then world number one Dinara Safina, who eventually took the spoils. Fans will be able to watch her play again for the first time since 2019.

In the men’s draw, the return of Nishikori is big news. He came agonisingly close to the title in 2014, when only Rafa Nadal – and an injury – prevented him from completing a dream week. The Japanese player, who also reached the semifinals in 2015 and 2016, will be participating in the Mutua Madrid Open for the tenth time.

Finally, another of the wildcards will go to one of the most promising talents in Spanish tennis. Landaluce, at 18 years of age, already has experience on the clay of the Manolo Santana Stadium, having clashed with Richard Gasquet there last season. This time, he arrives in Madrid having celebrated his first win in an ATP Masters 1000 match last week in Miami.

by ashkor87 This is a really strange tournament...replete with one-off results ..results are like it is a grasscourt Event ..champions are folks like Kvitova, Sabalenka, Jabeur..Swatek has never won it..on the men's side, it is more orderly..but then it always is!
The altitude apparently makes the ball fly through the air and negates the slowness of the court a bit..
This is one I am not even going to dare to prognosticate about.

by ponchi101 Everybody likes to talk about altitude in Madrid. How about the courts? You can make a very different court on clay, make it even very fast: just take off a few layers of the top clay.
Maybe they have thin courts there, with not too many layers of clay on top.

I say Sabalenka will do well, Zverev too. Carlitos, if he plays, has done very well before. And Elena is doing well this week so she may be in form.

by ashkor87 Remember the fuss when Tiriac had the clay blue instead of red? He swore the court was the same it always was, except for the color ..but yes, I agree, it is very easy to change the speed of any court . ..

by ti-amie Simona Halep Withdraws From 2024 Madrid Open
by Zachary Wimer
Today, 20:30

Simona Halep won't be playing at the 2024 Madrid Open despite initial plans to compete at the WTA 1000 tournament in the Spanish capital.

The Romanian's comeback to tennis hasn't really gone as fans might have expected so far. She swiftly returned just days after being allowed back to compete at the Miami Open.

She faced Paula Badosa in the first round of the tournament and lost in three sets after winning the first set 6-1. After that exit, Halep planned to play several smaller events to get back into playing shape.

The match against Badosa showed her that she was close but ultimately not good enough to compete against the best players yet. That's why she wanted to play some smaller events and, towards that end, accepted a wild card entry into the Oeiras Open.

She withdrew from that event a bit later, with plans to play at the Madrid Open. Unfortunately, she won't be playing at the Madrid Open either because she withdrew from that event as well.

The reason for her withdrawal is health issues that were present when she came back to Miami as well. Halep dealt with some minor issues at the event, and it seems like the issues are persistent enough for her to miss more time.

Ultimately, she doesn't want to risk an injury because that will keep her away from tennis even more, and that's the last thing she wants after having to spend over a year on the sidelines.

The former world no. 1 will now probably take more time to fully heal up and be ready for the only clay-court major - the Roland Garros. That's only a few weeks away, but injury issues don't go away overnight. She needs the added time to get fit, because it's been just a very long period that she spent away from the sport.

by Zachary Wimer

1 will now probably] take more time to fully heal up and be ready for the only clay-court major - the Roland Garros. That's only a few weeks away, but injury issues don't go away overnight. She needs the added time to get fit, because it's been just a very long period that she spent away from the sport.

There is a lot of "not journalism " in here. Inferences, speculation, opinion presented as fact.

by ashkor87 Madrid is strange but this could well be Rybakina's year. Began the year spectacularly, then had health issues, which seem to be over .just viral infections ...but she is looking more confident and resilient, and her game is as powerful as ever..she has certainly cut down the errors..

by ashkor87 Djokovic has withdrawn

Ok, I see it is listed above. But a bit of a shocker...

He's only played Madrid once in the previous 3 years - if he withdraws from Rome that could be significant.

by ashkor87 The guardian reports Pliskova has withdrawn..which is good news for Raducanu

by ashkor87 Pliskova is the kind of player who should have done well here. ?
Assuming the ball is quick through the air and slow off the ground, does it hurt volleyers or help them? I would think it hurts..people can pass you more easily and they get time off the ground...but I also note Kvitova has won this title 3 times, and she is certainly a volleyer..what do you think?

by ashkor87 If the ball is quick through the air and slow off the ground, it should be good for big servers (3 time champion Kvitova)..since on a serve the ball beats the receiver more in the air than off the ground ..can't decide about the volley, though. Will have to watch ..Rybakina, Sabalenka, should do better than Swiatek, Kasatkina, etc.

by ti-amie I was awake and saw a lot of Raducanu vs Carlé, a match I went into thinking Raducanu would win if not in straight sets but in three. Instead I saw Raducanu making a ton of errors, exhibiting poor court sense, and generally wilting before a determined Maria Lourdes Carlé of Argentina who won in straight sets 6-2, 6-2. Raducanu also had kinesio on I think her right calf.

Wonder if it is a combination of altitude making it hard to control balls and the fact that Carle, as a qualifier, had gotten adjusted already...if so, qualifiers could shock a lot of people here ..

Very possible about the altitude.

by ashkor87 saw a bit of Townsend Andreeva on youtube.. Amdreeva really moves so well on clay! she will be formidable when she gets her eyes fixed, for sure! Osaka moved better too, today, than at Stuttgrt.. getting the hang of it

by Owendonovan I struggled to get through the Wozniaki/Errani match highlight video. One of the least interesting set of "highlights" I've come a cross in a while. Their combined styles make for a painful match to endure, especially when slowed down by the clay.

by ashkor87 Samsonova's win over Osaka must have been a real exhibition of power hitting ..can't see it of course, have to wait for the Youtube

by martini4me Actually, the most notable feature of the match was how many drop-shot winners Samsonova had. She drove Osaka crazy with those.

yes, saw that even in the highlights video..pushed Osaka back with a powerful shot then dropshotted her to death. masterful performance.

Exposing Osaka’s clay footwork (as I read on Twitter)

Errani's matches are unwatchable.

Coco gets a double bagel on Rus, and Carle upset Kudermetova in straight sets.

by ti-amie Potapova was up 5-2 in the first set vs Leylah-Annie and lost it 7-5, eventually losing the match 6-3 in the second set.

I second the highlighted comment and will add so are Woz's for me.

Carlè plays a very aggressive game and anticipates well. Let's see how far she goes.

Errani's matches are unwatchable.

Coco gets a double bagel on Rus, and Carle upset Kudermetova in straight sets.
I second the highlighted comment and will add so are Woz's for me.

Carlè plays a very aggressive game and anticipates well. Let's see how far she goes.
Caro is super boring to watch, but she at least plays tennis. Errani plays whatever it is that arrives when you order tennis on Wish.

by ashkor87 For those who don't remember. Aravane Rezai was a Iranian-French player who burst upon the tennis scene like a comet .beat Henin and then won the tournament (Madrid) beating Venus..then disappeared...sad story of abuse etc from her father. She did try and come back a couple of times but in the end she just couldn't.

I read a post by someone yesterday explaining why players from South America tend to make the main tour later. I haven't been able to find the post again. She's 22 and I think this is her main tour debut?

by ashkor87 Yes, played for U of Georgia I believe, which is quite a power in college tennis..

by ashkor87 I see Coco is partnering TT here..every possible combination is being tried, it looks like. Makes more sense than Pegula, perhaps..though Coco isn't really a good volleyer, but she serves well, solid returns ...

Madrid's altitude is shown as 650 m (average). Highest is 840. While Gstaad for instance is at 1080. Guadalajara is 1566. So while it is noticeable, it is far from unique.

by Fastbackss Carle beat Raducanu, Kudermetova, and broke Ostapenko* to open the match

He stopped on a point, circled a mark (indicating he wanted a challenge).

But he didn't raise his arm or anything. Chair (Fergus) didn't grant the challenge saying he didn't ask for it.

As if the crowd needed more reason to be on his side. Went from being 30-30 to double break point. Nadal got it back to deuce but did get broken

by ashkor87 as if Nadal needs lessons in how to challenge. what is Fergus thinking?

Guadalajara has had its share of strange results too . Pegula won her first, and for a while only, 1000 level title there, now Sakkari's only 1000 level title.

by Fastbackss Rune was still a 2:1 favorite at the start of the third set against Griekspoor.

Now he's down a break. Being mildly petulant.

He had something I hadn't seen before. He went to slam his racquet, and stopped. Went to back of court and yelled in direction of his box, gesticulating wildly, and then slammed it meekly.

by ashkor87 Can't stand people who slam their rackets ..how can you be so disrespectful of the tools of your trade?

Of those 3 players only Leylah Fernandez has ever had a significant result at a significant clay court tournament. If they'd made a run at this event it would have been unusual.

He's an aggressive baseliner, and can finish points at the net, but he's not net rushing on every point.

If he were to make these comments in jest, with a bit of humor, they would be funny. But he makes them to put down the chair, or a lines person, or somebody. Which then, makes them unbearable.
He truly believes the world owes him something. Which is what puts me down.

Coco needs to improve her serve to compete with those three regularly.

There is still hope for Pegula. Seems like she didn't play Madrid, right?

I stand by it. When she has done well against them, she has kept her DFs way down. This year, her DF percentage is pretty bad. Last year, she kept it under control. She won't beat Iga or Aryna giving them 10-12 free points.

I don't think Gauff will maintain her Top 5 ranking by the end of the year unless she improves the serve, then maybe.

I guess we'll see, but she's currently 5 in the race midway through the season, and based on current form, I don't really see anyone in the top 20 that would pass her besides Rybakina and maybe Collins. Gauff has had a decent season so far - title and two big SFs - but that won't continue if she keeps DF'ing at her current clip. She's No. 5 and heading south with that DF rate.

by ashkor87 I guess Coco can stay with Sabalenka et al but she isn't winning enough lately to even get to play them..early losses, before QFs..she is sort of fading as a force. I agree she needs to cut down her dfs..

ashkor87 wrote:I guess Coco can stay with Sabalenka et al but she isn't winning enough lately to even get to play them..early losses, before QFs..she is sort of fading as a force. I agree she needs to cut down her dfs..
When Coco has stayed with the other top players, she has served better than she has been lately. She is in another serving slump. The mental toll is just as bad as the free points she is losing.

I should clarify - if Coco going to stay with them and beat them occasionally, she can 't serve as badly as she is right now. I think she was serving better at the beginning of the year, and last year she kept her DFs to an average level and greatly reduced them from 2022. So that's what I mean by she needs to improve her serve - she served 12% and 14% DFs the last two matches. Can't do that.

I do think she could stand to improve her serve overall, too, and since she worked with Roddick on it last year, I think she and Brad agree. But she at least has to keep her DF% to 5. She's lucky that she can defend so well so she can neutralize a lot of great returns off her 2nd serve.

What does it mean that Nadal didn't get the afternoon court time, and Alcaraz did?

by ashkor87 Interesting that Putintseva has beaten Rybakina both times they have met. Wouldn't have expected it ..anything can happen in Madrid but still, I would expect Rybakina to win...she seems to have mastered the conditions .

by ashkor87 Re Coco and DFs- DFs are mainly in the head..she will get over it with time..there is nothing fundamentally wrong with the mechanics of her serve .

by ashkor87 From what little I have seen of BHM, she has the serve to push even Swiatek back onto her back foot...if she serves well, she can certainly trouble Iga..

by Suliso She did trouble her, but only in the first set. I wonder what changed.

by ashkor87
Suliso wrote: Tue Apr 30, 2024 1:52 pm She did trouble her, but only in the first set. I wonder what changed.
Probably began to read the serve..?
Also, Swiatek is so quick, she can run down all those drop shots Sakkari couldn't reach ..but I suppose I am just speculating..will have to hear from someone who saw it ..I can't, here, nobody showing live.

by jazzyg Struff is giving Alcaraz all he handle.

I have never understood why Struff did not become a top 20 player. He still can at age 34, but he goes into cold spells where he struggles to win matches. He has serious game.

by Suliso Sinner is far less formidable on clay. I doubt he'll go past SF's here.

by Fastbackss Out of curiosity* I checked the odds on the Nadal - Lehecka match five minutes before it was supposed to start.

There are a few times that lines move - and one of them is just before the start.

I got in and saw Lehecka was a slight underdog (+102). I watched it and the line was changing every ten seconds. Within a minute it got as low as -154 before finally settling at -118.

Further curious I looked at the set market. Lehecka was +200 to win in 2 and +310 to win in 3. I never paid attention to this before, but that is hugely disparate. If you legit thought Lehecka could win - there are only two options. You would be better off to bet on BOTH him winning in 2 or 3 as opposed to him winning as a single bet.

*I thought could get some value with people picking Nadal out of nostalgia. Guess I should have checked earlier

by skatingfan I don't think I've seen Lehecka play for a while - he has really bulked up in the past year.

There's some speculation that Sinner is a little hurt, right?

by Suliso Alcaraz has lost his title at Madrid. He might now drop to #4 and almost certainly will be no higher than #3 seed at RG (assuming everyone plays).

by jazzyg Rublev should go on and win this tournament. Even though he's not as as good as the truly elite players when they are in top form, he's always had more game than he is given credit for. As long as they don't declare the semis or final a grand slam quarterfinal, he should be in good shape.

Fritz could trouble him in the semifinal if they play because return of serve is his weakest shot, but I can't see Fritz beating him despite his head-to-head 5-3 lead (Rublev is 1-0 on clay, beating him a tight three setter on his way to the Monte Carlo title last year). Sinner is not 100-percent healthy and although Medvedev has owned him on hard courts, the matchup should favor Rublev on clay.

For a while he was the only US male who played a full spring European clay season, willing to play qualies even. He's been working at it.

by ashkor87 interestingly enough, the women's tournament looks fairly 'normal' - the big 3 are in the semis.. the men's field looks pretty ragged, ravaged by injuries and withdrawals..
I expect Rybakina to wn this now - she beat Swiatek on a much slower clay court, and beating Sabalenka is always difficult, but she has done it often and she is playing very well..

Evidently he has been weight-training in the middle of the season, which Coco V said was unusual - usually you do heavy weight-training in the off-season.

by ashkor87 whew.. that was close. conditions looked pretty fast, much faster than Stuttgart.. as usual, I would ignore this tournament when it comes to handicapping the FO. The Madrid winner seldom wins the French... conditions are too dfferent . on the WTA side, that is - the ATP has been dominated by Nadal on clay and he wins everything in sight, so the correlation is very strong.

by mick1303 Everything shall be considered in a proper context. Comparing to 11 Monte Carlo titles and 10 Rome titles, 4 Madrid titles are not the sign of domination.

by ponchi101 Indeed. It shows that Madrid is different than the other clat court sites. And the winners' circle is also very different. Zverev has done well there, and although he has been good at RG too, the difference is obvious.

by Suliso Swiatek is a favorite to win RG, but not because of her Madrid title.

by ponchi101 It will be because of her Rome title. :D
Clay is where she is a heavy favorite.

by mick1303 It is widely publicized that Medvedev never been a repeat winner of ATP tournament. He won 20 in all the different venues. I just realized that Rublev follows the same scenario. His 16 tournament wins are also all different ))

How are we measuring return of serve? Sorribes Tormo doesn't seem to leading any of the statistics according to the WTA website, but I'm not sure how up to date this data is.
