Up to her of course, but doesn't she really have anything better to do with her life now?
Do you know the history of Venus and IW? It is probably that...
The history of Venus and IW is well known. So, losing in the first round to Camila Osorio will do anything about that?
I am sure you know it but does everyone here? That is what I was asking
by ponchi101 In THIS forum? Where Venus was one of the most liked players ever (and I mean, counting TAT1.0) and the Williams overall were super popular?
Yep, I think most people here now about that story.
by ashkor87 IW and Miami are both slow..the only difference is the humidity in Miami...expect Doha results to be repeated here, not Dubai

So I was suggesting IW giving Venus a wild card could be just IW trying to make amends ..
by ti-amie I understand that Venus may feel entitled to make up for the time she lost because of misdiagnosis of her auto immune illness but her point has been made. Doing this takes a chance away from other players and that in my opinion is not fair.

I was not talking about autoimmune disease! I am not elaborating because it is claimed here that everyone knows the history !

We're all long time tennis fans here and yes we know the story. I was looking at it from a different perspective from the one we all know. Even there I think IW has gone out of its way to apologize and make amends.
I think that at this point she should step away gracefully no matter what her motivation is for seeking this WC. Maybe she will step away here, I don't know. We'll see. I just hate to see her considered a "walking bye".
by ashkor87 Swiatek, Sabalenka, Rybakina should do well here- so also Anisimova, Noskova and Keys (if she is playing?)..those whom the conditions don't suit much- Pegula, Gauff. Looking forward to Bencic and Kvitova..
Medvedev seems checked out, and Sinner is out...Zverev and Alcaraz should rule, then..maybe even Rublev..I don't expect Michelsen to do much..Shelton may, he has the power to hit through slow surfaces ..

Yes, at this point in her life you would think she might have started a successful interior design business or launched her own clothing line.

Very unlikely..at Miami, maybe..home town now. She has little affection for IW, probably
by ponchi101 By now, maybe Venus just wants to play a match.
Even if she has dropped so much, it must still be difficult for her to find a competitive match (Serena is always away). Maybe she just likes to be in a really competitive situation.

AI.
by ptmcmahon Go try to get AI to make semifinal predictions for a tournament and you'll see exactly what Ponchi means. Was getting it to try Santiago this week and four times in a row it picked the same not possible four semifinalists, even when I gave it a link to an updated draw It's definitely a WIP, especially with sports.
(Side note a song I have been trying to remember for 30 years that I have been describing to my friends... it found in 30 seconds...)
by ashkor87 I am interested in seeing how different IW results are from Miami and why...do players peak early and then run out of steam,? Or do the great players adjust in time for Miami after bring shaken by IW? Last year, Medvedev learned from IW and did better at Miami ..didn't happen with the women..Swiatek etal petered out and Collins won Miami. The dynamic is interesting.
by ponchi101 The natural fluctuations in the game?
You don't always have to have an elaborate theory of why player A did well in tournament X and then, in the next tournament, s/he did poorly.
Let's say you have a player that has gone 7-3 in her last three tournaments. That is a very good run. But, it means:
She lost in all
And, since most seeded players play only four rounds in regular tournaments, it means that maybe she won 3-3-1 in the tournaments, and the last one she won only one round. Which is a natural phenomena as far as stats are concerned.
We always look for some complicated narrative, forgetting the obvious: only TWO players will do really well at any tournament, because of the nature of the sport. The rest will offer a great variation of results.
by Suliso The same applies to us lowly amateurs when we play tennis or any other sport. Can you really explain why one day you won and another lost vs the same opponent? I usually can't.
by ashkor87 As a counter, i am willing to point to a pattern- powerful players will do well at IW then will fail to adapt to Miami..humid, slightly faster courts. Only great players like Djokovic can win both, Vika too - she was the dominant hard court player that year
To be specific- Swiatek, Keys, Rybakina will do well at IW. Sabalenka, as I have remarked elsewhere, doesn't seem to fire until the clay court season. Those who do sell at IW will not repeat at Miami, it is a good test of how great Swiatek really is... We shall find out ..

Exactly. I think a lot of times here were seem to think good players should do well every time no matter what, and if not something is wrong Although part of that can be from some of the dominant runs we've seen last couple of decades.
by ponchi101 We keep forgetting: RR&N were NOT the norm.

I admit this was a bit lower than I anticipated.
I recognize it can't be on par with a Slam- however I also didn't anticipate you'd have to win 3 matches just to get close to what you do for losing the first round at one.
Not to mention the extra expenses of the tournament being longer (which has the doubling effect of taking a week off the calendar for other tournaments of consequence)

by ashkor87 Nice draw for Rybakina and Samsonova (who should do well here)..Coco too, though I don't expect her to go far. Anisimova will do well, especially with her new-found confidence but she has a bad draw..Bencic in round 2..Muchova has a very nice draw initially, then Swiatek eventually..
by ashkor87 Shelton has a nice draw, he should go deep here..anyway suits his game.Tsitsipas should do well, if he has recovered from his victory recently ..in the absence of Sinner, not much to see here other than Alcaraz
by ashkor87 Osaka is close to her best now...she has a good shot at winning IW if Swiatek falters - Swiatek is definitely favorite though!
Swiatek 40%
Ryba 20
Keys 15
Osaka 15
Anisimova 5
Field 5 includes Sabalenka etc.
by ashkor87 Others who will do well, not win the whole thing,- Machac, Rublev,Noskova, Berrettini, Ostapenko
Those who I don't think will do well,- Coco, Pegula, Sabalenka (though the court suts her), Medvedev,
Main reason is court is too slow for these players...they like to use their opponent's pace rather than generate their own...court need to help, which this one will not.Coco can generate power but her strength is footspeed and defense..not much use on a sloooow court

How do you give 70% to Alcaraz, who mas meekly eliminated by Lehecka in Doha in the QF?
Yes, he should be the favorite (Zverev's S. American tour was really bad) but 70% Not a bit too much?
And how is Osaka at her best? She retired with an injury at the Aussie, and has not played since.

Alcaraz plays his best in big tournaments..and he seems to really like IW..look at his track record. osaka has been looking impressive even in her losses, and in the exhos ..so it seems to me she is over her injuries..hopefully..

So there is a new surface at IW..is it faster/slower/lower bounce? I guess we will have to see for ourselves..loved Zverev's comment 'there is a new surface?'
The base surface is not what determines speed and bounce..it is the top layer..which can be whatever

She said it herself. That she would not remain around long if these were the results she would get.
And she is a very good example for when we make those predictions of players winning 15 grand slam, or the hype on Carlitos when some writers said he would win 30. Yes, he will win more. But it takes very little for one of these great players to return to the pack. An injury here that never fully recovers, an off court issue that pulls you off the tour for a few months.
Osaka looked like the clear cut heir to Serena. She looked good for double digits. And now she is losing to the Osorio's of the world in R1 of a surface she was the very best on. A sad story, and a reminder that the Serena's, Steffi's, Martina's and Chrissie's are the exceptions.

the story is not even half done. why are people so happy to see her go? I, for one, certainly hope she gets back to health and fitness.
by ponchi101 Nobody is happy to see her go. But, as I said, she herself said that if the results are not there, she will retire.
Of course I would like Naomi to get back to full health. When she was playing well, her tennis on hard courts was superb. But we are talking here about what we are seeing. And she is not the player she once was.
by ti-amie
by ti-amie I saw Fonseca play a little during the Golden Swing and thought his game was suited to hard courts but was waiting to see him play on one. I just watched his match vs Fearnley and I think he will be a decent hard court player barring injury of course since he's only 18.
He also speaks accentless grammatical English although he plays for Brazil.

by JTContinental Interesting that they have not played before. Yastremska can go off the rails against pushers more defensive minded players, so I expect Jabeur to come through.
by ashkor87 The low bounce could cause problems for folks like swiatek and gauff..
I know, I know, I know. After such a loss and athlete of Naomi's class must feel very bad. But when you say that it was the worst match of your life, you are saying the other player did not win it. Kind of a bit unfair.
Osorio has now been the recipient of two worst matches in life. Osaka here, Sakkari (who did not say that) at the Aussie. Let's see if this time she can back it up.

A consideration for Zverev as well........
That comment about "if he loses that Aussie open final he may be broken" keeps gaining data points.
by ashkor87 saw a bit of Swiatek vs Garcia.. a couple of low bounces near the baseline had Swiatek mistiming the shot.. the bounce is a bit uneven .. not always low but unexpectedly low in spots..
by ashkor87 awesome performance by Parks! Her power works well here... overwhelmed Kalinskaya..made many errors though, missed some putaways..

Retirement maybe.
I still say that Mick's comment has gained on importance. Zverev's S. American tour was a mess, and now this. It bodes not well.
by mick1303 I don't think Zverev will retire. But he may lost faith. He'll be on tour, but the level of his effort might degrade. Not a big fan of his, but I don't like when something like this happen to anybody.

Not so weird if one considers the court and conditions in general
by JTContinental It's pretty weird for Novak to lose to a lucky loser in R2 of a 1000 event no matter what the surface. And it hasn't just been here--the results in the Middle East tournaments were pretty weird too.

by ashkor87 Sakkari has a good chance of beating Gauff today.. the court suits Sakkari better and Coco has been in horrendous form. 60% chance of an upset.
by ashkor87 Andreeva crushed Tauson, 3 and 0. Expected it to be closer, I am sure,! Ryba had better watch out,!
by ashkor87 Who is this Watanuki?! Never heard of him before..going through the draw like the California fire,!
by ashkor87 Andeeeva probably is the best defender in the game.. up there with Coco and Paolini, maybe a bit better even..she has a good shot at winning Wimbledon, especially given how bad Swiatek is on grass..

Paul beating Norrie surprised me too..Norrie is a past champion here, the surface doesn't really suit Paul...so good show by TP !
Players going in opposite direction in their careers. Personally, I think Norrie is an overachiever. He has some of the ugliest strokes ever (the BH is pathetically disgusting) but he ha reached a very high level and has some good wins. But he was not going to be an elite player for a long time.
Tommy is much more regular. That counts.

Sakkari also has a 5-3 h2h with Gauff
That said, there are few players on tour playing as badly as Sakkari right now.
by JTContinental It was close, but Keys' win streak up to 14.
Coco takes the first set against Sakkari in a tiebreak.
by ti-amie Horrific that Cori needed 6 mps to close out Sakkari. She checked out before she had closed out the match.
by ashkor87 Bencic playing really well ...like she played in the Tokyo Olympics, on a similarly slow hard court...can she win this tournament? If Swiatek falters, maybe

I'm a bit surprised when she wins any match currently.

There she was up 5-2 and completely lost the plot. Double fault after double fault. Anyone else would've forced her into a third set but Sakkari is in free fall right now.

Jumped 136 spots in the rankings.
by ashkor87 Coco doublefaulted 4 match points? A sign of mental fragility..no other reason for such double faults, really

Saw highlights against Tiafoe..he seems to be a marvellous volleyer, knows when to come forward, executes well...

I won't swear to the amount but she df'd a bunch. Like I said she checked out mentally before closing out the match. That is a coaching issue.
by ti-amie Meanwhile the second set of Shelton/Khachanov has been a good watch. Karen was up 5-3 and Shelton is now up 6-5 and about to serve for the match.
by ti-amie Shelton takes the match 6-3, 7-5. The second set was a war.

by JTContinental Revenge for Coco, who lost to Sakkari in the semis last year
by ashkor87 great win for Vekic over Navarro but it is increasingly clear that Navarro doesnt have the weapons.. she will need help from the court.. should not expect much from her till Cincy, then...

There is an issue with the mental aspect but, since she hit 21 DF's in her previous match, by now you must think that there are some bio-mechanical issues too.
I don't think she knows how to brush up on the ball to put spin on it, when serving.
That has got to be the most horrific attempt to slam dunk a ball ever.
If Sampras had had one so easy, the ball still would have not landed.
Ben has to curve his desire for the spectacular shot. You just hit a 150 MPH serve, buddy. The point is already spectacular enough.
by JTContinental I don't always hold much stock in court surfaces as a factor in matches, but this slow court has to be the reason Swiatek gave two breadsticks to Muchova. Their previous matches have all been extremely competitive.
by ti-amie They're trying to restart play after a lengthy rain delay. The forecast for the rest of the week isn't promising.
